Ratings Comments: Many factors affect the ratings above and beyond the speakers control. As examples:

In 2006 I delivered a presentation on the New Jersey Boardwalk while the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds delivered an air show directly overhead for five full hours - the room literally shook every two minutes.

Occasionally construction noise such as hammering and jack hammers in the back ground disrupt the presentation.

The temperature can be insanely hot or cold causing audience discomfort. This is a frequently problem and anyone who has sat through a freezing cold room, or sweaty hot room is far less likely to reward the instructor with a perfect score.

On many occasions, the Internet access provided is not reliable and the resulting failed demonstrations involving the Internet result in lower instructor ratings.

Because there is no good alternative, on several occasions I have lectured sick with colds, migraine headaches and even strep throat. (I finally determined that the feather pillows and comforters found in today’s hotel rooms were causing sinus infections and migraine headaches – but that took three years.

I’ve had fire alarms go off during the night forcing me to evacuate the room into the cold night air.

Other factors you might not think of also affect the quality of the presentation. For example often the thin walls allow the audience to hear the speaker next door.

On one occasion I had my equipment stolen off my table during lunch.

Frequently, Microsoft Windows will download and install new code will I am teaching – freezing my computer up temporarily. I won’t even mention the software bugs that cause computers to hang up without warning.

Given all of these factors which are out of my control, I am very proud of the ratings I have consistently produced over the years. I always strive to do my best no matter what the conditions might be.
